The game in Branson versus Lees Summit…

The Pirates would go up against a team that was 6 A, dropped to 5 A and had a LOT of good players. However, the joy of my life was at the beginning of the game when the boys from Branson came out to the middle of the field and prayed for the game. I wish you could understand how great it is to see your son put things in the proper perspective. He’s prepared hard, gotten himself ready, and now the game of his life is about to start. As they introduce him, he runs out on the field. I’m sure it is no surprise to those of you who know my son, but Cameron, in full football uniform, does a back flip in the middle of the field. I laugh hard at my son who just continues to amaze me. The realization looms over us that this could be his last game ever and definitely could be the last time he’d put his pads on as a Branson Pirate. Now it is time to go to battle. But to him, it was just another opportunity to glorify God.

The second play of the game, Cam broke loose for a 74 yard breakaway run. He was tackled on the 2 yard line by a horse collar tackle. I guess those things just happen. I guess that horse collar tackle described the rest of the game. We got horse collared. We lost, but at the end of the game, to hear the coaches talk about Cam and the boys and how special this team has been was so much more rewarding than any scoreboard could be. They described the great character and leadership. My greatest joy is just knowing that Cameron through all the adversity, the ups and downs, has truly learned that life is more than football, more than just accomplishment. It’s about serving the Lord….

Glory

October 28th, 2010 — 11:44am

Below is an excerpt from Keith Chancey’s blog, chanceykeith.wordpress.com. Enjoy!

All of you know me, I always use words like, “ it’s all good, unbelievable, phenomenal, or awesome.” Today I am grasping for a word to describe last week that would be beyond any word I would ever use. The only word I can come up with is the word GLORY. To God be all the glory.

As I was down last week speaking at Mississippi College and in Ruston, LA at Crossroads Church, all I could think of was to God be the glory. I just kept thanking him for the opportunity to spread the word of God and share the love of Jesus. I am overwhelmed with the idea that he could use me. It was a humbling week as I reflected on how much I love getting to do what I get to do in life.

There were so many highlights to my week, but I want to start with this one. I met a boy named Goose in a restaurant named Froghead. Our conversation started over his tattoo, as I asked him, “What’s the story behind the tatt?” He immediately showed me his tattoo that said west on the top of his arm and east on the bottom. He began to explain to me that his sins had been removed as far as the east is from the west. I was moved to tears as this boy shared a story that broke my heart. At 14, he was kicked out of his home, and had been on drugs and sleeping around ever since. His life was a wreck. And one day, he cried out and asked for more in life. He called his aunt “who smiled all the time” and asked her why she smiles. She led him to Christ just recently. Since then, he has been abstaining from the junk in his life, putting it all before the cross and living radically for Jesus. He was my waiter. We spent about an hour and a half taking. Goose is a natural salesman, as he then convinced me to try the fried pickles. He told me if I didn’t like them, he’d buy them. He was willing to put his money on the line. As the night went on, I recognized he was willing to put his life on the line as well for what he now believed in Jesus Christ. I mentioned Goose in chapel at Mississippi College. I’m sure Goose today is being bombarded with people asking him his story. Goose told me that our conversation was the first time he’s ever told anyone about Jesus.

My question today is, “Have you asked anyone today what their story is? In our world there are so many people wishing someone would come up and ask a good question and then be willing to listen. When you’re filled in Christ, you don’t have to prove yourself anymore. You want to hear other people glorify Christ instead. That is why I chose the word GLORY, because of what God has done and the contentment that He has given me to live for Him.

There was a lot more to the week, so I gotta move on. As I left MS & LA, I made my way to Arkadelphia, AR, where I was able to watch the performance of a lifetime. Callie Kay Chancey was a host of Tiger Tunes. Now, I know I’m a gloating dad and highly biased, but what I saw Thursday and Saturday could only be described by the word GLORY. God truly was glorified through a little girl who has grown up to be a wonderful woman of God. She sang like an angel and made her dad cry many times as I watched the gifts God has given her and how her smile electrified an audience. And I know that smile is a gift of God to be used for His GLORY.

I left Arkadelphia to drive to Branson where the continued realization of a GLORY-filled season unfolded. Cameron played a football game Friday night. Without going into too many details, let’s just say the game that was highly influenced by the officiating. Eleven Pirates played 15 players on the other team, including the 4 referees. I know that sounds terrible, but it was so true that night. I’m really glad that it happened though, because I saw our boys dig down deep. We were up 21 to 0 and it looked like we had the game in hand. A few minutes later, the score was 28 to 7 and we were thinking about subbing in other players for experience. All of the sudden, the refs took control and the next thing we knew, the score was 29 to 28 and we were losing. A very interesting moment happened when one of our players got knocked out. Cameron ran onto field and called the players to pray. GLORY–as I watched Cameron understand the true reason they were out there. The game came down to the last play. Cameron had led a couple pass drive down the field. We had one attempt to win a game we thought we’d lost—a 44 yard field goal into the wind. What seemed impossible, God made possible that night as our kicker Fernando kicked it right thru the uprights. We won 31 to 29. GLORY!! But, the reason I say glory is because of what I saw next. The coaches and kids were huddled in the middle of the field celebrating when Cameron again rallied everyone to pray. His prayer made me cry, as he said, “God, thank you for the victory, but the victory that we really want is the victory of living for you. It’s not about winning or losing it’s about giving our very best to your GLORY.” Wow. I am so proud of my kids, so thankful, but most importantly, I just thank my God for the GLORY that He reveals everyday.

This week at the Institute I’ve had the opportunity to teach on evangelism. We looked at John 4 and Acts 8 as models. The one thing I know about evangelism is that our lives are meant to bring GLORY to God. And we do so by letting people know who He is. So this was a very fun week for me. I could say a lot of words and you know me–I’d do it. But the one word I will leave with today is the word GLORY.

Hesitating Between Two Opinions

October 11th, 2010 — 9:51am

Below is an excerpt from Keith Chancey’s blog, chanceykeith.wordpress.com. Enjoy!

The highlight of the weekend was Callie Kay Chancey being home. Having her smiling face in our home is always such a joy, as she brings great laughter and excitement to the house. Our time always consists of playing card games, going out for lunch, and going to the theater to watch the latest chick flick. And we always enjoy attending the high school football games together. Friday night, we had a pretty tough first half, down 21-13. However, in the second half we roared back and won 47-28. Cameron had a great game. It is really exciting to watch this group as a team come together. I feel like they are very special and have a lot to look forward to this season. What makes this team special is that they are learning how to win together.

When Callie mentioned the option of coming home for the weekend, Karen and I had to make a decision. Trying to be a good husband, I was planning to take Karen down to Dallas to celebrate her birthday coming up on the 18th. I had lined up an almost perfect weekend with seats in the owner’s booth for Saturday’s football game Arkansas vs. A & M, tickets to the Texas Rangers playoff games, and tickets to the Cowboys game. But for Karen and I, without a doubt, the greatest joy was to stay home and spend time with Callie and Cameron. There was never a question of what decision we would make. So when I said I had lined up an almost perfect weekend with Karen down in Dallas, what it turned into was a completely perfect weekend in Branson with the family.

This morning I was reading 1 Kings 18 about Elijah and the prophets of Baal. I’ve read this many times but this morning something jumped out at me. In verse 21, Elijah asks the people, “How long will you hesitate between two opinions?” What a great question to ask. Literally what he was saying here was how long will you hop between two ideas? The Baal worshippers were trying to combine worship of the Almighty God with the pagan worship of Baal. Elijah calls them out and says there is only one true God. One reason this stuck out was my experience in a recent golf tournament. Before the tournament started they sang the pledge of allegiance. As about 150 men were waiting to tee off, the lady who was singing sang “one nation indivisible with liberty and justice for all.” I about had a heart attack. She left out the most important part of what our country stands on—“under God”. It was so subtle and I’m sure not many people even noticed, but to me it was a dagger in the heart of how far our country has strayed. If we’re not careful, we also will find ourselves embracing false religions and hesitating between two opinions. My prayer today is for myself and all of us to join together to call out the little compromises that the world would have us make. Let God and others know whom it is that you stand for. No more wavering between two opinions. We have got to get our country back to its roots—under God.

I am trying to influence those under my care to stand up for truth as well. As a daddy, the greatest joy of my life is watching my kids love God and let Him be known to everyone around. I am so proud of Cameron and Callie and the young leaders they are becoming in Christ. This week at the Institute we are doing the Truth Project by Focus on the Family. I am really excited about seeing how this will affect the thinking of all of our students–to be challenged at the core of what they believe in the Scriptures and its absolutes. I would encourage you, if ever you get the opportunity, to call Focus on the Family and buy these DVDs. It will rock your family’s world.

So as you can tell, in many areas of my life right now the Lord is teaching me not to waver between two opinions, but to stand firm in the Lord and to encourage others to do likewise. I pray that you will recognize opportunities to do the same.

Walk thru the Bible with me…

September 29th, 2010 — 12:31pm

Below is an excerpt from Keith Chancey’s blog, chanceykeith.wordpress.com. Enjoy!

Last week in football Branson was victorious again. Win #2′s score was 42-20 against Willard, in which Cameron threw for two touchdowns and ran for another. It’s fun to see the boys improving as a team. However, winning comes with a cost. In last weekend’s game Cameron promised the offensive line steak dinners if they would block better. So tonight at my house I am serving steak to 16 LINEMAN! I guess the cost of steak is still cheaper than the cost of the doctor bills I will incur if they don’t block for my son.

To all the bikers out there, I’ve really been getting into biking lately. Yesterday I biked 40 miles through the Ozarks, a beautiful and fun ride. I wish some of you would come ride with me soon!

At the Institute, Karen is teaching this week a walk through the Bible from Genesis to Revelation. It is so fun to watch the students get excited about learning their Bibles. I had four conversations yesterday with students from Christian schools telling me they had no idea how the Bible fit together cohesively until yesterday. It’s unbelievable how God has blessed the Institute to help students be equipped. I am already praying for the class of 2012, that they would watch the graduates of our program and be amazed at what they know and, more importantly, how they live. We pray that future students will know the Institute is their next step because of the testimonies of people who have attended in the past.

Thank you so very much for your prayers for us. We need them! If you ever have any prayer requests, please let me know so I can be praying for you.

A new website and a Nelly concert

September 3rd, 2010 — 4:35pm

Below is an excerpt from Keith Chancey’s blog http://chanceykeith.wordpress.com. Read and be encouraged!

Exciting news from the Kanakuk Institute side of life–not only are we prayerfully anticipating the arrival of 57-59 (pushing for 60!!!) new students in only EIGHT days, but also, today we just launched our brand new KI website (www.kanakukinstitute.com). Please check out the new look and information!

On the homefront, we are gearing up to play Cassville tonight–a good team but hopefully not as good as last week’s team, if you know what I mean. I’ll let you know more on that next week! This Labor Day weekend Callie is coming home to watch her brother play football, and we’re so excited to have our family together.

Wanted to share a story with you from a day in the life of Keith and Karen Chancey to show you the stage of parenting in which we find ourselves. Proverbs 22:6 says, “Train up a child in the way he should go, even when he is old he will not depart from it.” For 20+ years I have hoped my children would turn out the way I wanted, but I think they are turning out just like me instead!! So, a couple weeks ago my son Cameron asks to go to the Nelly concert here in Branson. Karen and I immediately say, “No, you have no business at a rap concert,” but as we began to pray and process further, we felt alright about letting him go with the proper restrictions in place, and we asked him to be a light during his time there.

So the day of the concert comes, and Cameron heads off. A little while later, Callie texts us asking if we know where her brother is right now. So, apparently, Cameron, trying to have fun and enjoy life, spotted a group of people hanging out near the backstage area and went to join them. When the backstage door opened, he pretended like he deserved to be there and just headed backstage with them!! So Cameron’s eating food from the green room, talking to Nelly’s uncle, WALKING ACROSS THE STAGE DURING THE CONCERT–I mean, it’s just hilarious the way he became part of the crew. So, as you can tell, Cameron is becoming more and more like me each day! To make a long story short, he had a great time and came home with a story for the whole family to laugh about. One of Cameron’s goals for the year is to create memories, and he sure is off to a great start!

As our kids get older, Karen and I continue to loosen the reins, to allow them to make more of their own choices and to learn from the successes and failures that result. We love to watch our kids enjoy life, within healthy boundaries as the live like Christ.

Just a little nugget I’d like to share with you from something I studied this morning in John 5. The story of Jesus in Bethesda at a healing pool introduces a man who’s been an invalid for 38 years. Can you imagine? I love the question Jesus asks next–knowing the man’s condition, he asks, “Do you wish to get well?”

Immediately the man starts making excuses why he’s not already been healed, but Jesus simply says, “Get up” and immediately the man is healed. Isn’t it easy for all of us to talk about what we want and struggle with what we don’t have? But do we really wish to get well? We must believe that God can do whatever He wants to do. I am highly encouraged by these words–”Get up & be healed.”

There are so many things in our lives today–sexual temptation, lies, deceit, lack of discipline and a multitude of other sins. Do you wish to get well? Go today. Get up. Receive the blessing. Open your Word to read. Get on your knees to pray. Quit making excuses and accept God’s healing.

Love ya,
Keith
