Snow Days

January 22nd, 2011 — 3:02pm

I love the snow when it first comes. The beauty of a snowy field undisturbed by human footprints is hard to beat. One of our last snows in Branson was so sparkly, and the snowflakes were so fine, that it literally looked like diamond dust was falling out of the sky. Snow is peaceful and cozy and reminds us that there’s a majestic “Beauty Maker” up there who, through His infinite creativity and wisdom, invented this wonderful weather phenomenon. It’s kind of mind-boggling to stop and analyze God’s creation. Why did He create snow? What good purpose does it accomplish? I know there are all kinds of scientific reasons why snow happens, but why did God choose to make snow an option? Is it just about offering a different kind of beauty, just to give us a change of scenery?

The one thing about snow though, is that it is not particularly long-lasting. You can’t catch it, can’t put it in a jar to save for later. Even if you did, its beauty doesn’t last. Three day old snow is usually patchy, salty and brown. Snow is one of those gifts that we have to enjoy while it’s here, because soon it will be gone again.

What are the joys in your life that are fleeting like snow? Is it time with loved ones who won’t always be around? Time with friends who may someday move? Time with children who grow up too fast? God makes all things beautiful in His time. It’s up to us to recognize that beauty and stop to savor it before it’s gone.
