What is the Kanakuk Institute?

The Kanakuk Institute is a graduate program that was created to prepare your students to be successful, efficient leaders for the cause of Christ. With each passing year, we all see the increasing need for the younger generations to assume influential roles within the church, business world, medical field, political office, and most importantly, at home. We want your son or daughter to be a man or woman of character, integrity, honesty, and faithfulness for his or her entire lifetime. Such an endeavor can only be accomplished if God’s Word is foundational and central in your student’s life. Over the past decade and longer, we have noticed a trend: that college students and graduates are moving onto campuses and into new careers with incredible passions to be influential leaders but lacking the skills and experience required. Those same students began to separate their careers from their families and their faith. As believers, we know that we are called to love the Lord with our heart, soul, mind and strength (Luke 10:27)–a Walk divided is not a successful life. At the Kanakuk Institute, one of the key goals is to help your student understand that faith is life…and both are ministry.

What benefit will my son or daughter receive by attending the Kanakuk Institute?

We promise you won’t regret sending your son or daughter to the Institute. While here, they will study the Bible from cover to cover. They will learn why they believe what they believe and how to back that up with Scripture. They can choose to receive graduate credit while at the Institute.  But most importantly, they will develop greater character, ministry skills, knowledge, and leadership abilities, which sets a Biblical foundation for the rest of their lives. This is a one-year investment into all future endeavors AND into eternity.

“The Kanakuk Institute cast a vision for our kids of how they can and should use their gifts to make an eternal impact in this world. If you are a parent who is concerned that your child is putting career advancement at risk…sleep well. The biblical equipping they receive helps them make a life, not just a living. My son, daughter-in-law, and son-in-law are all Institute graduates, and their training has helped them make an impact in their community.”
-Dean Macfarlan, Managing Partner, Macfarlan Capital Partners

“Before attending the Kanakuk Institute, my focus was on success and financial gain. When I got to the Institute, I knew I had to give the Lord all I had, even if it was just for one year. That year was absolutely dedicated to ministry and to studying God’s Word. The experience totally changed my life. Now, I’m back in the business world, but my goal is no longer advancement in the world’s eyes. My motivation is Christ-I’m intent on making His name great.”
-Dupree Scovell, Real Estate Executive, Trammell Crow, Dallas, TX

What will my son or daughter study?

If you are concerned that your student wants to take a “year off” and become lazy, the KI program ensures that will not happen. Students will be busy with classes, internships, work study hours, writing teaching notes for the entire Bible, developing belief statements over 10 issues of major doctrine and theology, Inductive Bible Study, and community involvement. The Kanakuk Institute is graduate program so your student will be earning up to 12 hours of Masters degree credit toward John Brown University and up to 28 credit hours for Dallas Theological Seminary. During the year, we study a significant percentage of the Bible verse by verse, but we also balance our textual study with courses on leadership, ethics, finances, marriage, accountability, etc. In all that we do, the KI heartbeat is that your student does not just fill his or her head with knowledge but practically applies everything to daily life. How much does the Institute cost?

The approximate cost per student attending the Kanakuk Institute is actually around $21,000. However, through the generosity of our donors and the willingness of our President, Keith Chancey, to raise money, each student has the opportunity to accept approximately $10,000 in scholarship to attend. This scholarship makes the Kanakuk Institute a non cost-prohibitive option for anyone interested in attending. Students pay around half of the actual cost for eight months of tuition, some of the KI required books, 12 hours of graduate credit, a year’s worth of seminary credit, and living expenses. In exchange for this scholarship, students will be asked to participate in a work study job three hours per week and a weekly dining hall clean-up rotation as well as occasional required campus workdays. How does the Masters credit work?

Graduates will receive credit toward a master’s degree in Business or Theology through our partnerships with John Brown University, The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, and Southeastern Seminary. While many students choose to attend the Kanakuk Institute independent of the academic partnerships, all students will graduate with free transferable credit to each of these schools if they choose to use it in the future.

Classes from JBU are available online and may be taken concurrently with the KI year.

For further information, visit our JBU page or JBU’s graduate website.

How can parents be involved?

You are welcome to visit the Kanakuk Institute at any time. Come preview class & campus as part of your decision-making process, or come visit your child after they are here.

We have two planned events for parents of current students to attend. During the fall, we will host a Parent’s Weekend with opportunities to see campus, meet our staff, and enjoy a little local Branson flavor!  In the spring we host parents & family guests for our Graduation Ceremony. Again, you are welcome to view campus, meet the staff and fellow students, and celebrate your son or daughter’s completion of the program. Check with your student for full details on these two events.
